Accurate electric monitoring
So I go this to monitor power usage of an apartment in our barn, with an intent on using that to bill the tenant for electric usage. It’s a professional level monitor that will provide me that information. I’m an electrical engineer by training, so I wasn’t daunted by the installation. That said, installation is NOT for the average homeowner. You only need to clamp the monitor around the lines in question, BUT you also need to wire the unit into both legs of your electrical panel. Unless you’re proficient and comfortable working in your electrical panel, you’d be best to hire an electrician to do the install. Once installed, it connects over 2.4g WiFi – so you need decent signal at your panel. It uses the SmartLife app, which is okay. I can look at data by hour, day, or month. Note that the app is constantly trying to get me to buy their cloud storage, but I really don’t need that and so find the constant barrage of ads annoying. But for the money, it delivers accurate usage and thus is a good value.

Capable energy monitor with surprisingly good DIY support
This energy monitor has been working well so far. Installation was straightforward, don’t be afraid to remove that cover on your electrical panel 🙂 – and the app gives a clear view of real-time usage along with longer-term trends. The included CT clamps feel solid, and the data seems consistent and believable for whole-home monitoring.One thing I didn’t expect—but was pleasantly surprised by—is how usable this is beyond the app. I’m in the process of integrating it with MQTT and Python, and it appears to be fairly well supported for that kind of setup, which isn’t always the case with consumer energy monitors. I’m planning to push this data to Grafana, and maybe also use it to help correlate energy use with data I scrape from my personal weather station.Overall, it’s a solid option if you want visibility into your power usage, with the added bonus that it doesn’t lock you into only a closed ecosystem if you want to do more advanced monitoring later.

Challenging Installation
I had this unit installed by a Master Electrician and even though he had never installed one of these before, I wanted a licensed professional to do the job instead of hurting myself in the process. He read the instructions and even pulled up the video just to make sure everything was correct. The video shows a non-American panel, and the instructions were vague. He ended up tapping two of the three L wires to two breakers as understood by the instructions. He then clamped two clamps, one on each supply wire. My panel is a single phase, two wire. After he left, I noticed the clamps were pointing outward so I switched them to point inward and the reading in the app shows a negative value. Accoring to support, that means the clamps are backwards … but according to the instructions, they are supposed to point inwards (power coming in).As for energy monitoring, yes, it does that (although mine is telling me I’m producing energy). I just don’t see how this unit can tell me “what” is using power, i.e. refrigerator, A/C, etc.Not exactly satisfied with the unit. I was expecting more detailed information about energy consumption. And, even though it works with the Tuya app, it does not provide any data to Home Assistant where this data could be ingested in a much more meaningful way.

This is an excellent whole-home energy monitor that delivers exactly what it promises: clear, accurate, real-time insight into where your electricity is actually going. Installation is very approachable if you’re comfortable working inside a panel, and the compact size of the main unit makes it easy to mount even in crowded or cluttered breaker boxes without having to rearrange anything. The clamp-on sensors seat cleanly, calibration is straightforward, and once installed the readings are responsive and consistently accurate. The SmartLife app isn’t flashy, but it’s functional and data-rich, giving you the kind of granular visibility that quickly exposes vampire loads, inefficient appliances, and usage patterns you’d never otherwise see.Connectivity has been rock solid as well. Once paired, it stays connected, updates reliably, and hasn’t dropped off the network or required re-pairing, which is more than can be said for a lot of “smart” energy gear. For anyone who enjoys data, wants to better understand solar production and net usage, or is serious about identifying waste and lowering energy costs, this is a genuinely useful tool rather than a gimmick. It’s well thought out, easy to live with, and punches well above its price point.
