Potentially Hazardous: I don’t Trust this Heater in my House; It Even Randomly Turns On by Itself!
Quick background: I’ve been using a micathermic heater for over 10 years with my dogs. In winter months, the temperature might be 72 at my level, but it can be 5 degrees colder at the floor level. And my toy-breed dogs get chilled quickly. They LOVE lounging on a bed in front of this type of heater to stay warm. The heat is gentle and does not dry out their coats or skin – it’s like lounging in the sun to them. One loves it so much, he’ll sit down in front of the heater and start pawing at the face of it to get my attention: “C’mon, human, turn on my heater!”Well, my 10-year old heater recently died, so I ordered this one as a replacement. My initial reactions out of the box: first, when plugged in but off, all the buttons are brightly lit on the panel. They do dim some after a couple of minutes of non-use, but the last thing I want is more constant glowing light pollution in my room from an unused appliance. Second, the buttons are very sensitive to touch. Just brushing them lightly can activate the button. And this is a problem: my dogs’ paws or noses can easily turn the heater on (or off or inadvertently change the settings).I thought maybe I could prevent this with the child lock setting, but, nope. That lock only locks the heater settings when it’s on (so a child cannot change the settings or turn it off). There is no way to lock the heater in the off position, so any child (or my dog) can easily and accidentally turn on the heater with just a light touch of a body part. OK – so I can solve these two problems by covering up the buttons with a piece of rubber mat or cardboard. This will hide the constant glowing light from the buttons and prevent my dogs from being able to accidentally turn the heater on or adjust any settings with a wet nose or paw.Then I turned the heater on and set it on 74 (while the room was 72). Once the heater accepts the desired setting, it will then show the current room temperature and show it rising as the heater is working. I walked into the adjacent kitchen, and about 5 minutes later, I suddenly noticed the display on the heater jumping every second between 74 and 76 degrees – back and forth, back and forth, every second. I thought maybe something was wrong with the display?? As I walked back in the room, I realized the heater was also clicking on and off with each change in the temperature display from 74 to 76 back to 74 and so on. I thought this couldn’t be right: how could any heater constantly be cycling on and off every second?So I grabbed my voltage meter and plugged the heater into it. Once the heater reached the set temp of 74 degrees and the display started jumping between 74 and 76 again, I watched my voltage meter. Sure enough: the meter was jumping from 1,540 watts to 1 watt and back and forth again and again EVERY second. Holy cow: what is this high-wattage cycling doing to the internal circuitry of this heater, and worse, what is it doing to my house wiring?? OK – I can work around this strange problem too. I changed the desired setting to 100 degrees, which the heater will never reach. So now it stays on constantly, and I can just use the remote to turn the heater on and off as needed.But now the final problem that I cannot work around: I used the heater for 3 nights in a row (set on 100, so it always stayed on, and with the control panel covered so my dogs couldn’t accidentally activate the buttons). All seemed fine until the morning of the 4th day. Before going to bed, I turn off the TV, all lights (many by remote control), and the heater. On the 4th morning I awoke, and the heater was on. What? Did I forget to turn off the heater? Hard to believe – but, OK, maybe. So on the 4th night, I made the deliberate effort to turn off the heater and even placed the heater remote upside-down on my coffee table as a clear indication to myself that I had turned it off.At 3 am, my dogs woke me for a potty break. And, bingo: the heater was on, again! Since it was 3 am, I just turned it back off and went back to bed. When I awoke again later that morning, the heater was still off. I spent some time troubleshooting. First, there is a delayed start feature on the heater (as well as a timer feature). I thought maybe I had accidentally activated the delayed start feature. But I checked, and mine was set to zero hours – meaning the delayed start feature was off. (And also note: I never connected this heater to the smart app. I was just using the manual remote, so there couldn’t have been any other conflicting settings).Then I thought, by chance, maybe some other remote of mine was using the same frequency. So I retraced my nightly steps and grabbed every remote for any TV, light, etc., from downstairs to upstairs that I press before going to bed. I brought them all down and tested each one. Nope, none of them turned on the heater. I remained baffled and wasn’t sure what next steps to try.I briefly abandoned the troubleshooting to prepare breakfast. About an hour later, I was still in the kitchen when suddenly I heard “beep beep” from the adjacent room. I looked up and, sure enough the heater just turned on – all by itself. Nothing else was on in the house, I wasn’t using any remote, my dogs were nowhere near the heater – I was simply standing in the kitchen, and the heater just magically turned on. OK, there is no workaround for this problem.So between a control panel that any child or dog can easily activate by accident, the fact that this heater will then repeatedly cycle on and off between 1 watt and 1,540 watts EVERY second once it reaches your desired temperature setting, and the crazy fact that this heater can just turn on all by itself at any time (including when you are not even home), this is just an electrical fire waiting to happen. I unplugged this heater immediately and will never be plugging it back in. This expensive mistake is going out on the next trash day.

Nice little heater. I love the features, especially the app, which is a game changer. I used to worry constantly about forgetting to turn it off, but now I know! This makes my life easier and safer with the included app. The heater itself is good quality and warmed up my bedroom very well. It takes a bit longer than fan heaters, but it’s quieter and provides more even heat. Highly recommend.

The heat it generates is adequate, but I question the safety of the heater. The clicks, pops and occasional booms it makes during operation is worrying.
